Friends of Rachel

This year the South Central Middle School is mixing things up.  After attending the Rachel’s Challenge Presentation, we’ve decided that we would like to incorporate Rachel’s Challenge into our school and community.  For those of you who do not know about Rachel, she was the first student killed in the Columbine High School shooting.  After she died, her family found journals containing 5 challenges.  These challenges were:  Look for the Best in Others – Eliminate Prejudice; Dare to Dream – Set Goals – Keep a Journal; Choose Positive Influences; Kind Words and Actions = Huge Results; Start a Chain Reaction.  The Friends of Rachel of South Central Middle School, which includes over 60 students, has divided into four Chain Reaction Teams.  These teams are:  Students in Need, which helps new students, handicapped, and those that are picked on make friends; Letters of Kindness, in which we send notes or letters to let people know how much we appreciate them or just to brighten the day for someone;  School Pride, which encourages students and people in our community to show pride in all areas of our school; Community Outreach, in which we help by picking up, mowing lawns, or running errands for people in need.  We encourage you to help the Friends of Rachel by helping us with these tasks.  If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please contact the school at 622-4545.  Let us know if you have anyone to refer to Friends of Rachel.  YOU MAY JUST START A CHAIN REACTION!

Community Outreach Chain Reaction Team

The Community Outreach Chain Reaction Team at South Central Middle School is sponsoring a food drive.  We will start collecting on December 7th and it will last for two weeks.  You can send your items with your child.  We will also have a box outside of the office at the elementary/middle school and another box inside the office at the high school.  The collected food items will be distributed by the preachers of the community who know families that are in need.  We will take any non-perishable food.  The Friends of Rachel Community Outreach Chain Reaction Team would greatly appreciate your support and participation.  YOU MIGHT JUST START A CHAIN REACTION!!!!

 YOU ARE MY HERO!!!!

Our hero this time is Chianne Reid.  Chianne is always in a good mood, even if everybody else is bummed.  She always makes you smile.  Chianne is very helpful and encouraging to others.  She has made special birthday surprises for several of her classmates.  She knows what to do to help the environment.  Chianne LOVES to dance and sing and she is very good.  Thank you, Chianne, for being a good friend and a helpful classmate.  YOU ARE OUR HERO!!!!!

 TIME TO ENCOURAGE

Our leadership team has decided they would like to put out boxes to let people write encouragement notes to anyone in the school.  The Encouragement Box has become a big hit.  Some days delivery of notes takes quite a while.  We are happy that students are taking time to say “Thanks” or to give a compliment to another student or staff member in the school.  Next to the encouragement box, we placed a Bully Box to give students the chance to report any bullying incident they witness or are a victim of.  We are proud to say that notes in the Encouragement Box outnumber those in the Bully Box.  Our boxes in the elementary are doing well also.  The Student in Need Chain Reaction Team is working on a way to help victims of bullying behavior.  We are proud to be a part of South Central Schools.  Keep up the good work, Timberwolves.  YOU MIGHT JUST START A CHAIN REACTION!!!

 CARDS FOR OUR SOLDIERS

South Central Middle School Friends of Rachel students wanted to wish a Merry Christmas and say thanks to Recovering American soldiers.  We created hand-made cards with thank you letters and holiday pictures.  Every student in Middle School has either drawn or written a card to the soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.  We were very excited to do this project, when the project was announced.  Our letters are going to:  A Recovering American Soldier
% Walter Reed Army Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue, NW
Washington, D.C.   20307-5001

We hope our cards will provide hope and cheer for this holiday season.  You might want to send a card to brighten a soldier’s day.  YOU MIGHT JUST START A CHAIN REACTION!!!

COOKBOOK DRIVE

The South Central student body began a cookbook drive for the residents of Greensburg.  Over 500 cookbooks have been donated in the last two months.  The residents have expressed their appreciation for the cookbooks. Most of Greensburg lost all of their belongings in the tornado.  We are still accepting cookbooks from anyone wanting to donate.  You may take your cookbooks to the high school or the middle school, and we will get them delivered.  Remember – YOU MIGHT JUST START A CHAIN REACTION!!!

CHRISTMAS CHEER

The South Central Middle School students made ornaments for the Comanche County nursing homes.  We made glove Santas and snowman snowflakes.  The leadership team is going to deliver them to Pioneer Lodge and to Protection Valley Manor.  We hope to spread some holiday cheer with this gift.  Remember the residents of each nursing home this holiday season.  YOU MIGHT JUST START A CHAIN REACTION!!!

MOTIVATION STATION

The Motivation Station is one section of the bleachers that is decorated to show our Timberwolf Pride.  This section is where the South Central students sit to cheer on the basketball teams.  Last week during the game against Greensburg, most of the students were sitting there showing school pride and cheering on the teams.  At our next home game, we are looking forward to seeing as many South Central students as possible sitting in the Motivation Station.  We think this is a great idea!  Get together to support our school.  YOU MIGHT JUST START A CHAIN REACTION!!!

BUCKET FILLERS

We read a book called, Have You Filled a Bucket Today?  Everybody carries with them an invisible bucket.  When others say kind things or do kind things for you, they fill your bucket.  If someone says or does something mean, they dip into your bucket.  The students in South Central Elementary School are trying to become “Bucket Fillers” instead of “Bucket Dippers.”  Each class has these bags and some marbles.  When a student does something good and the teacher sees it, she will put a marble in the bag.  But if the teacher sees you do something bad to someone, she will take one the marbles away.  Each class is trying to FILL THEIR BUCKETS.  When they do, they will get a special surprise.  Then the activity begins again.
